Ukrainian IT students and alumni rank universities – and reveal appalling corruption

DOU.UA, a leading online community of IT programmers, has published a ranking of Ukrainian IT universities based on a survey of their graduates and students. The strengths and weaknesses of each university were evaluated based on their overall image, knowledge capacity and usefulness.

More than 2,800 people participated in the survey, with 60% of these currently employed as IT developers.

The Taras Shevchenko University in Kyiv, the National University of Radio Electronics in Kharkiv, and the Kyiv Polytechnic Institute lead the ranking, which also included the following establishments:

– Kharkiv Aviation Institute (Zhukovsky Aerospace University)
– Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute
– Donetsk National Technical University
– Dnipropetrovsk O. Gonchar National University
– Kharkiv Karazin National University
– Lviv Polytechnic
– Odessa National Polytechnic University
– Vinnytsia National Technical University
– National Aviation University

Among the strengths of their university, many respondents noted teachers and the subjects taught. The weaknesses highlighted included outdated courses, a lack of equipment and poor student motivation.

The level of corruption within universities was also surveyed, with 51% of respondents stating they face corruption often or occasionally. The most corrupt university as deemed by students and alumni is Lviv Polytechnic (97% rate of perceived corruption). In many other universities, the surveyed corruption rate is at around 80%.

The cleanest establishments appear to be the Taras Shevchenko University and the Polytechnic Institute in Kyiv, where corruption was only recorded by 20% and 50% of the respondents, respectively.
