Last week GitLab Inc., an open-source software startup founded by Ukrainian entrepreneur Dmitry Zaporozhets, announced that it raised $20 million from US investors August Capital, Khosla Ventures, and Y Combinator. This Series B round follows a previous fund raising operation in September 2015.
GitLab’s set of tools allow people to collaborate on all digital content more effectively, scaling projects across functional groups, collaborating in real-time and more easily managing workflows and version control.
The company claims that more than 100,000 organizations worldwide use their products with over 1 million projects hosted in GitLab.com since 2014.
GitLab offers a “Community Edition” as well as an “Enterprise Edition” which includes extra features for organizations with more than 100 users. The better part of GitLab’s customers are US companies.
The GitLab open source project started in Ukraine in 2011. Two years later, Zaporozhets and his partner Sid started bootstrapping GitLab as a company. Incorporated in 2014, the company participated in Y Combinator in early 2015.
The company’s team is distributed between Ukraine, Serbia and The Netherlands.
