Russia-connected cyber-espionage group targets MH17 investigation team

Pawn Storm, a cyber-espionage group believed to have ties with the Russian government, targeted the international investigation team of the MH17 plane crash, cybersecurity firm Trend Micro asserts in a report released yesterday.

“We believe that a coordinated attack from several sides was launched to get unauthorized access to sensitive material of the investigation conducted by Dutch, Malaysian, Australian, Belgian, and Ukrainian authorities,” the Trend Micro analysts write.

In its long-running cyber-espionage campaign, Pawn Storm has had numerous international targets, including the White House, NATO and, more recently, Syrian opposition groups, according to the report.
